Privacy Policy
Shareli is built around a single privacy principle: your data belongs to you. We do not collect, sell, or store your personal information.
Last updated: August 2026
🔒 Summary: Shareli collects no personal data, uses no tracking cookies, stores no messages permanently, and cannot read your encrypted content. All data self-destructs.
1. What Information We Collect
We collect no personal information. You do not need to provide a name, email address, phone number, or any other personal detail to use Shareli. When you connect to Shareli, the server assigns you a temporary anonymous display name (e.g. "Guest 04") that is discarded when you disconnect.
2. How We Handle Your Messages and Files
All messages and files shared through Shareli are:
- Encrypted in your browser using AES-GCM 256-bit encryption before being transmitted.
- Stored only in the server's RAM (temporary memory) — never written to a database or permanent disk storage.
- Automatically deleted when the self-destruct timer you set expires.
- Permanently lost when the server restarts — there is no backup or recovery mechanism by design.
The server never has access to the encryption keys used to protect your content. Keys are generated in your browser and exist only in the room URL that you share with your recipients.
3. Cookies and Tracking
Shareli does not use:
- Tracking cookies or advertising cookies
- Third-party analytics services (e.g. Google Analytics)
- Fingerprinting or behavioral tracking
- Any form of cross-site tracking
Shareli uses your browser's localStorage to save the following preferences locally on your device:
- Display name — your chosen nickname for chat rooms
- Theme preference — dark or light mode selection
- Notification settings — sound, browser notification, and mute preferences
- Room admin tokens — encrypted tokens that identify you as the creator of private rooms you created
- Message drafts — unsent text is temporarily saved so you don't lose it on page refresh
None of this data is ever transmitted to our server. It stays entirely on your device and can be cleared at any time by clearing your browser's site data.
4. Server Logs
Our hosting provider (Render) may collect basic server access logs (IP address, request timestamps, HTTP status codes) as part of normal infrastructure operation. These logs are managed by Render under their own privacy policy and are not used by Shareli for any purpose.
5. Third-Party Services
Shareli loads fonts from Google Fonts and syntax highlighting libraries from CDN providers. These external requests may result in your IP address being visible to those providers. No personal data is shared with these services by Shareli.
6. Browser Permissions
Shareli may request the following optional browser permissions:
- Notifications — to alert you of new messages when the browser tab is in the background. You can enable or disable this in the notification settings menu.
- Microphone — to record encrypted voice notes. Microphone access is requested only when you tap the voice note button and is never accessed in the background.
- Camera — used exclusively for the built-in QR code scanner to join rooms. Camera access is requested only when you open the scanner and is never accessed in the background.
All permissions are optional and can be revoked at any time in your browser settings.
7. Children's Privacy
Shareli is not directed at children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect any data from children.
8. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Any changes will be posted on this page with an updated date. Continued use of Shareli after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
9. Contact
